Hartpury 2nds 6-13 University of West of England

UWE took on the might of Hartpury in a top of the table league encounter in a winner takes all contest. UWE secured promotion to the top flight of University rugby for the first time in the clubs history.
In an entertaining game it was UWE who came out of the blocks the quickest taking the game to Hartpury from the first minute. In a ferocious start both teams put width on the game. It was UWE who broke the deadlock first after an excellent attacking sequence. Scrum half Scott Lowden scored the try sneaking over from 5 metres out.
Hartpury hit back with a sustained period of pressure which led to them gaining a penalty after UWE infringed for being offside. The UWE defence was outstanding as they repelled wave after wave of Hartpury attack. Liam Wilkinson was outstanding and set an example for the other players to follow.
As the game opened up both teams had opportunities to score but it was UWE who took their opportunity first. Alex Jeavons became more and more influential as the game progressed and he controlled the game from outside half. Indeed it was his half break and offload that put George Kariannis through. Kariannis was hauled down a metre from the line but an excellent offload to the supporting Lowden gave the scrum half his second try of the game.
The second half was a real battle of attrition with neither side willing to back down. The defensive effort and the intensity that both sides put in was superb. Both sides traded penalties as the game ebbed and flowed from one end to another. In an exciting finale Hartpury battered at the UWE line but in a courageous effort the UWE players kept them out. The elation at the end was clear for all to see as UWE reached the BUCS Premiership for the first time and won the league in the process.

Head Coach George Tavner commented “I am delighted for the players. Their performance today was excellent and they got what they deserved. This is a huge achievement for UWE Rugby and reflects the hard work and attitude the players have put in all season.”
