Staff Profiles

George Tavner (Director of Rugby & Head Coach) 

George specialises in back-line play and defensive patterns and has vast experience with coaching at the elite end of the game. George has coached numerous representative teams. These include the South West U18s, England Colleges and the Bristol Rugby Academy where he is now programme leader for the new RFU AASE programme.  Last season he coached the England Universities 7's team in the BUCS championships.

George graduated from UWIC after gaining an MA. in Sports Development and Coaching and a BSc. in Sports Coaching. He is an RFU Level 3 Coach. He has led Filton College Rugby Academy to numerous national titles including the British Colleges Elite Cup, St Josephs National Schools Festival and the Middlesex Sevens. Numerous players have gone on to play professional rugby under his guidance.

Since taking over as Head of Rugby at UWE in 2006 he has been at the forefront of creating a new culture to both playing and training. UWE is now one of the best rugby centres in the county for aspiring elite players. The support structure now includes conditioning coaches, physiotherapists, analysts and specialist coaches. This is reflected in the teams recent achievements including gaining promotion twice in the last four seasons and reaching the BUCS trophy final. UWE are now an established BUCS Premier League institute and are building further for the future.
